Introduction

I came to Dougherty Family College because of the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students from diverse backgrounds, many of whom are first-generation college students or overcoming various challenges. As a lover of words, writing and communication, it is a joy to help our scholars grow as writers. Serving as an advisor and mentor here is another part of the work that is fulfilling. My first career was in journalism and that brought me to Minnesota as a reporter for The St. Paul Pioneer Press. Later, I worked in communication at Mayo Clinic before becoming faculty in communication, English and leadership at area colleges and universities, including the University of Minnesota, University of Northwestern – St. Paul and several institutions of Minnesota State. For many years I have operated a consulting practice in communication, education and organization development.

My professional interests include: writing and speaking about issues of equity, inclusion and justice; memoir writing as a tool for personal healing and growth; telling unknown or little-known stories of the African Diaspora and using narrative mediation for polarity management.
