Introduction

I have been working with school-aged youth for nearly 25 years. As a youth worker, teacher and school administrator, I have devoted myself to ensuring the students I served had equitable access to a quality education despite living in a world that in many ways has been created to withhold this from them. I have come to believe that while our work in K-12 is vital, without dismantling systems in higher education that create barriers for first generation students and students from underserved communities, our students will never have access to the quality of education they deserve. I believe my work at the Dougherty Family College meets both my desire to support students through their educational journeys, but also contributes to my larger passion of changing and dismantling institutional systems that create barriers for our students. I am excited to be a part of an amazing program and team that is committed to supporting our students and eliminating the opportunity gap.
